What’s the minimum amount of kit I need to pass myself off as a re-enactor?
Above is an archery practice scene shamelessly copied (as always) from English Longbowman, 1330-1515 (Warrior S.) By Clive Bartlett, Gerry Embleton (Illustrator). It depicts a off duty archers at the practice butts, set between 1450 and 1480. Now take a look at the next couple of pictures ….
These two guys are levied archers of Cheshire and Flint in the 1330’s.
Conclusion? Unless you want to take part in a full on battle re-enactment a demonstration of archery does not need gambesons, mail, sallets or even bollock daggers. All that’s need is your bow, your arrows, a hood (or a hat) a tunic or shirt, which if long enough covers up the lack of braeis, points and proper hose and therefore you can get away with long johns or suitable tracksuit bottoms. The only things will need are a good pair of replica medieval shoes, a belt and a pouch (to keep your car keys, your wallet and phone [set on vibrate!] in).
If you make the tunic and hood yourself the basic costume can be around £80 (with the bulk of the costs going on the shoes and the material). As a beginning costume it’s a start and can be added as the finances become available.
For the women, if you’re handy with a sewing needle and have the time you can make your own dresses. Keeping things simple is key and although authentic buttons and button holes are tricky to make, the good news is that your dress can be put on over your 21st century clothing (as long as it’s not too hot!)
A great resource for all types of medieval clothing, both male and female is The Costumer's Manifesto.
