Newcomer Jonas Armstrong as the “new” Robin Hood coming in 2006

Back when I was teenager and Saturday night television didn't revolve around B-list celebrities trying to sing and dance their way through public phone in popularity contests there was an ITV television show called "Robin of Sherwood".

For some fans it remains the definitive screen treatment of the Robin Hood myth and was heavily borrowed from by the creators of Kevin Costner's 1991 film "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves".

After viewing the TV series for a second time I have to say this is a much richer, more magical Robin Hood than the big screen adaptation and I can see why people rave about it twenty years on.

And with the continued success of “Dr Who”, news is that Saturday night television is going “retro”.

The BBC have announced that filming has just started on a new Robin Hood which will star  newcomer Jonas Armstrong in the lead role.  The “new” Robin Hood will be on our screens this Autumn but until then you can revisit the  “old” by watching “Robin of Sherwood”.

Here's my own personal review on the "Robin of Sherwood" television series followed by a slightly tongue in cheek  look at the archery side of the show.
