Episode 6 "The Taxman Cometh"

Robin and his group make use of a kidnapped tax inspector to break into Nottingham Castle to steal Tax silver and Marian makes a momentous decision.

Costume Department, There’s No Need

The character of the Abbess wears your standard nun’s black and white outfit. With all the wacky costumes in this show you can’t go wrong here, right?  Wrong.  For some reason the costume department decides to jazz things up by making it out of silk, or more probably polyester, so that it’s all shiny looking.  Why bother?  In fact why not just make it out of rubber next time, eh guys?

Whittling a Key Out of Wood

Robin and the Merry Men have been tricked into going into what they thought was a strong room full of chests of tax money.  In fact the chests are empty and door has been closed and locked behind them trapping them all in.  What are they to do?   Well luckily Will Scarlet knows that the locks for the chests were made by the same guy who made the lock for the door.  What does he do?  He whittles a key which eventually he gets to fit one of the chest locks, tries it in the door, it opens and they all rush out.  Hurrah!  Except not only are locks such blatant pieces of prop work ever to be made by someone who doesn’t know how a lock works in the first place (really, Will might just as well have whittled a wooden swipe card), but if he can whittle a key anyway why not just whittle one which fitted the door in the first place?  Imagine if after all that effort the locks weren’t made by the same guy?

Homage or Ripoff? Lethal Sherwood Forest Weapon 2

Remember the bit from 1989 film Lethal Weapon 2 where Mel Gibson’s character escapes from a straight jacket by dislocating his shoulder?  Cedric, the son of Flaxton the tax inspector uses the same dislocating shoulder trick to escape from his rope bonds.

Except Cedric was tied to the tree by having the rope wrapped around his arms and torso.  So if he really could dislocate his shoulder, in reality he’d have a dislocated shoulder … but still be tied to the tree.  This trick works with a straight jacket because the ends of the arms are tied to the back of the wearer and are kept close to the chest with only a little movement possible.  A dislocated shoulder therefore makes it possible for more movement and the chance of pulling your arm, and eventually the jacket, over your head.
