Robin Hood Goofs - Episode 8
Episode 8 "Tattoo? What Tattoo?”
The outlaws humiliate Guy of Gisborne at a feast by stealing an engagement ring he intended for Marian. But matters soon take a turn for the worse for Robin when he discovers a shocking secret about Gisborne that sends him spiralling out of control.
Sir Guy’s Body Warmer
Feel the power of the costume department again as Sir Guy’s trademark trench coat is turned into a body warmer so he can get his arm cut and reveal the distinctive tattoo on his wrist. Next episode the arms for the trench coat will have been re-attached.
Robin Goes Killy
Robin “Never Going To Kill Again” Hood finds out that it was Sir Guy who attempted to kill King Richard. On finding out this news Robin, who’s been a bit hippy’ish up until now, goes into a killing mood while the Merry Men, who’ve been wanting to kill, turn into peace loving hippies and stop him. The strange thing is Sir Guy wants an end to the Crusades and Robin wants an end to Crusades because they both believe it’s “Rome’s war” (what ever historically that’s supposed to mean). So how can the characters continue to be at such loggerheads when they the both want the same thing, eh, scriptwriters?
“They Couldn’t Find Jerusalem On A Map”
This is Sir Guy’s clichéd and derisory reply to whether people cared about the Crusades. It’s worth pointing out that medieval world maps had Jerusalem centred in the middle due to its importance in the medieval mindset. Therefore it’s kind of ironic that this line shows up (a) that people did care and (b) unlike say, Burkina Faso, it’s very hard not to be able to find it on a map. I’m guessing this line wasn’t supposed to be intentionally so ironic though.
How To Break Out Of A Nottingham Dungeon
Djaq has been captured and thrown into the dungeons. She takes out her little bottle of hydrochloric acid that she keeps on a cord around her neck and burns the hinges off the door. It’s during these close ups that you can see the bars of the dungeon are made from wood. So Nottingham dungeon bars have all the strength of a garden trellis and you don’t really need to burn the hinges off.
The Amazing Rope Shelves
The sheriff recaptures Djaq and wants her to produce some more hydrochloric acid. He takes her to the workshop of the last alchemist who worked for him and hints that he was killed for not producing anything worthwhile. Well, judging by the fact the workshop consists of a ring of shelves suspended from the ceiling by ropes, I’m guessing the last alchemist never produced anything because gusts of wind from the window, the odd accidental nudge and the occasional clumsy cleaning lady kept spilling his research all over the floor. Worst set design ever.
The Case of the Smoke Blinded Guards
Djaq manages to escape from the alchemist’s workshop by making a smoke bomb, setting it off and then crawling out on the floor past the sheriff and the guards. This escape is only slightly ruined by the fact that the smoke is rising and it leaves the floor visibly clear. So the guards have to stand in the doorway pretending not to see her as Djaq, plain as day, crawls out the door.

The Guarderobe Escape
So while Djaq makes her own escape some of the Merry Men sneak into Nottingham Castle (again) to rescue her. They all accidentally meet up and run around looking for a way out. It’s now that they come across a guarderobe. A guarderobe consists of a chute built into the castle walls that permits the passage of “waste” outside, usually into the castle moat. The scene is shot entirely from the perspective of looking up through the wooden toilet seat. It’s supposed to be a genuine comedy moment as the Merry Men realise they have to jump down a toilet. But even when Little John jumps straight through the seat without grazing his elbows you’ve got to admire their amazing luck on finding Rik Waller’s personal lavatory.
Didn’t We Just Leave That Party?
Robin decides to do a prisoner exchange with the sheriff by swapping Sir Guy for Djaq. The place they decide to exchange prisoners are in the tunnels of the mines. These would be the same mines you destroyed back in episode 5 then? Judging by the outside location shots the answer to that question would be “yes”.
